The story behind the artwork

Inspired by the regions sense of freedom, this piece embodies themes of self love, autonomy and resilience. More than an act of creation, it serves as an act of reclamation - challenging conventional views of women’s bodies and rewriting those narratives through the lens of the female gaze. Each brushstroke tells a story of complexity and strength, reflecting the layered emotions women navigate daily when trying to establish their identity.
This work symbolised a pivotal moment of release and acceptance, marking a step forward in embracing imperfections and the realities of healing. After years of pushing art to one side in favour of life’s “obligations”, this painting reignited the joy that comes with freedom. Approaching the canvas without the burden of perfectionism became a transformative act of faith, driven by the belief that starting, even imperfectly, deserves celebration. This open mindset was influenced by the South of France with its carefree lifestyle and the courage to let go.

Visual elements
The warm, natural colour palette evokes a sense of timeless comfort. Beige symbolises safety, stability and embraces the natural state of being. It serves as a reminder that women are enough just as they are. The composition blends elegance with rawness, while the interplay of light and shadow accentuates the woman’s curves and contours. It gives the piece a sculptural, goddess like quality.
The painting radiates grace and calm, a visual embodiment of learning to breathe and let go. Within its layers lies a quiet yet powerful celebration of self love and a return to what brings true happiness. The brushstrokes may flow more freely with less concern for perfectionism. It allows for an uninhibited expression of thoughts and feelings, supplying creative freedom to explore identity and emotions. The movements within these brushstrokes may be deliberate yet unforced symbolising a balance between strength and vulnerability.
Meaning and intent
At its core, this piece is about reclaiming autonomy over one’s body and defying cultural narratives previously objectifying women. Instead it focuses on empowerment, told through chaotic brushstrokes that capture the turbulence of healing while celebrating the journey. This piece was the first to be painted on a canvas of this size. The newfound confidence caused a breakaway from the internalised hesitation to take up space. It asserts itself with boldness, demanding to be seen. The creative process serves as a powerful metaphor for embracing imperfection and vulnerability, inviting viewers to reflect on their own journey of identity and self discovery.
